SUMMARY:Building 'Learning Assets' in the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:A Seminar for Classroom Teachers Reception - Year 8
 Presented
  by Kath Murdoch
 Glenelg SA&nbsp\;
 Practical approaches to strengtheni
ng the skills and dispositions needed for learning across the curriculum a
 nd for life!
Our curriculum provides us with a framework not only for de
veloping knowledge and skills in the disciplines but capabilities that tra
nsfer across learning areas.&nbsp\; In the contemporary classroom\, educat
ors work to help learners see themselves as capable\, curious\, resourcefu
l individuals with a strong sense of agency. There is growing evidence of
the importance of nurturing the kinds of dispositions and skills associate
d with agency. Being curious\, adventurous\, resilient\, coupled with the
 skills of self-management\, collaboration\, thinking\, and communication a
re amongst what we can think of as ‘assets’ for learning. Growing thes
e assets in our learners helps set them on a path to independence\, contri
bution to community and a love of learning for life.&nbsp\; These skills
and dispositions do not grow by chance – they are best developed through
an explicit\, thoughtful\, embedded approach that embodies an inquiry sta
nce. The role of the educator is pivotal. In this wonderfully interactive
and motivating workshop\, Kath will draw upon her vast experience of intro
ducing her ‘learning assets’ to schools all over the world and sharing
really practical ways to effectively embed skills and dispositions for le
arning into our work with children and their families.&nbsp\; We will exp
lore ways of approaching the 6 learning assets but this workshop will be r
elevant to educators working with the IB Approaches to Learning and Profil
e Attributes as well as the general capabilities in the Australian Curricu
lum or indeed any collection of generic skills and/or character traits sch
ools might have developed. &nbsp\;Those participants yet to develop such a
framework\, will walk away with a template for introducing one and a stro
ng repertoire of strategies to support implementation.&nbsp\; Over the co
urse of the day\, participants will:
